Ah, but that's exactly my point: a URL *IS NOT* necessarily a "site", or 
even a "web page". Any given URL might (or might not) point at a "web 
page". It might be anything at all, from a comic strip, to a 
feature-length movie or a song, to a single byte of data extracted from 
some ungodly huge database somewhere, to an interactive terminal 
session, to ... Well, who the hell knows what it might be pointing at!

To Joe Average User, sure - "URL" has become (mostly) interchangeable 
with "web page address". To someone like myself, who writes code to deal 
with URLs, a "http://" URL is a totally different beast from a "ftp://" 
URL, and has to be handled accordingly. I don't even want to think about 
what kind of mess is likely to result from trying to treat an FTP URL as 
if it were HTML, ferinstance. Granted, nothing's likely to explode 
(except figuratively) but treating one as if it were the other is, at 
best, likely to produce garbage. (Unless one gets lucky and the file at 
the FTP URL actually happens to contain a chunk of HTML)
