It's been part of the URL spec since... Well, since so far back that I 
can't remember whether it was part of the original spec, or if it got 
added in the next revision. Along with HTTP and FTP, it was made part of 
the spec WAY early.

The point I was making (or at least, attempting to) is that the examples 
I gave *ARE NOT* "web[site] addresses". 

"URL" doesn't mean (although I'm quite aware that it regularly gets used 
as though it does) "the address of a web page". It stands for (or did - 
the "official" meaning may have been diddled a bit while I haven't been 
paying attention) "Uniform Resource Locator". A (theoretically...) 
unique way of specifying exactly where to find one particular piece of 
information, in a clearly defined format that *EVERYBODY* who follows 
the spec can parse easily.

When it starts "http://" or "https://", it is (or at least, it's 
expected to be) a chunk of HTML code that a web browser can/will 
retrieve and then process to display a "web page". Possibly, but not 
necessarily, including grabbing stuff from other URLs (that might or 
might not be HTML) to create the displayed content. If it starts with 
*ANYTHING* other than "http://" or "https://", then it's *NOT* a "web 
page". It might be the location where a file can be retrieved via File 
Transfer Protocol ("ftp://") or BitTorrent ("magnet://") It might fire 
up an interactive terminal session ("telnet://") or get you a usenet 
post ("news://") or any of several other resources that I can't remember 
without going and digging up the spec.
