I did a quick reality check anno 2012 in Safari, Google Chrome, Opera
and Firefox on Mac OS X. Safari and Google Chrome show an error message
on top and the document up to the error; Opera shows an error message in
the console. Firefox is (still) the heart-stopping exception (well,
that's not wrong, either, just BAD).

Maybe your testing environment expired (the value of observations again,
go figure).

I sort of assume you mean 'incrementally' when you say 'progressively'.
Even in Firefox, that was filed as a bug and got fixed quite some time
ago. C.f.

1) The requirement is *well-formedness*, not *validation*.
2) XML DOES NOT PROHIBIT INCREMENTAL RENDERING, ANYWHERE, THAT'S JUST
   SOMETHING PEOPLE WITH BLOGS AND WHO LOVE TO UC EVERYTHING MADE UP.
