So pre-ANSI C supported a "pointer to a pointer to a structure of
arbitrary type" *in a type-safe manner*?
C has void* as a generic pointer type. In pre-ANSI C, char* could be
used similarly (though I don't know what explicit guarantees were
offered). I'm not sure what you think has been lost.
