Are you serious?  You started out with a set of simplistic rules for a 
trivial use case that broke down as soon as they encountered a more 
realistic problem.  You have then added yet more special case solutions.

Do you not see how much easier such code is to write with automated 
resource management?   RAII allows the programmer (and the reader) to 
focus on the higher level aspects of a solution without having to worry 
about the trivia associated with resource management.
