For C, there is a plethora of compilers out there, many still used for embedded systems where support ceased decades ago. Suppose someone were starting to learn "C with features" down the road, only to find that the system they're targeting doesn't support these features? If I had a job teaching (or writing books about) C, I'd teach C89, giving my students the widest possible base for future jobs (at the expense of a few inconveniences). On the point, I agree that C has quite a few aspects that range from mere oddities all the way to design flaws, but being aware of those and dealing with them is part of using the language. If you can't, use a different language. I mostly use Python, R, and C, and I always enjoy switching between languages (and the C compiler enjoys bitching about missing semicolons and the '<-' operator). But C is always where I feel most at home. robert
