But I, and as far as I can tell tell, > Alex, have placed no defi nition of the defintion of a byte in the > context of transmitting ascii char acters; nor does the ASCII standard > define one. ANS X3.4 was mainly concerned with ensuring the unambiguous interpretation of bits transmitted, and didn't need, nor did it care, to specify bytes. Even the 8 bit extension doesn't mention bytes. The name kind of gives this away; it's an information interchange specification, and doesn't have regard to a unit of transmission or storage or addressing. The IETF http://tools.ietf.org/search/rfc4949 defines ASCII as "A scheme that encodes 128 specified characters -- the numbers 0-9, the letters a-z and A-Z, some basic punctuation symbols, some control codes that originated with Teletype machines, and a blank space -- into the 7-bit binary integers. Forms the basis of the character set representations used in most computers and many Internet standards." > > I only have access to the ISO standards via our subscription system; > ANSI i s un-available to me. > National standards bodies are reluctant to re-engineer global standards, and ANSI quite clearly states that it does not develop standards; it accredits other bodies and adopts their standards. An ISO standard is generally adopted as an ANSI standard. ANSI is on ISO; http://www.ansi.org/standards_activities/iso_programs/overview.aspx?menuid=3 ANSI standards are expensive, but are released for certain purposes without cost; for instance, the INCITS document http://www.unicode.org/L2/L2006/06388-review-incits4.pdf contains the ANS standard. ECMA (another standards body) publishes their standards for free; the equivalent (and AFAIK identical) to the ASCII standard is http://www.ecma- international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-006.htm. I think I'm done here.
