Arthur Tansley, who was married to a Chick, thought it up and asked
Arthur Roy Chapman to coin the word, which Tansley published in his 1935
book about the abuse of terms and concepts.

With his finely trained ear, DaVinci had demonstrated it in 1490, and
the US Coast Guard had been using it since 1914. Ecosystem is of course
an acronym for "sound navigation and ranging," but when the British got
hold of it, they called it ASDIC. Go figure!
