Perhaps you could define "indirect" ?. afaics, most risc designs use
register indirect for just about all memory accesses and older cisc
designs like 68k even had a set of registers dedicated to holding
memory addresses.

Just because something is "unfashionable", doesn't mean that it isn't
an appropriate solution. Fashion changes with the wind and usually
bears no relation to any technical considerations, good or bad. There's
a good reason why orthoganal, cisc architectures were successfull,
even if a little was lost in absolute performance terms. Raw hardware
performance is of little use if there are not enough competent
programmers to write decent compilers for them...
