The Univac 1108 and its successors have an indirect bit in each 
instruction that has a memory address and the indirection includes not 
only the address and another indirect bit, but an index register and 
even a bit that indicates index register incrementation.  So you could 
really could "do clever things", especially once you realize that 
control instructions such as jump to the address given in the 
instruction could be indirected as well.  This allowed for some *really* 
clever things.

Interrupts were locked out during an indirect reference set and there 
was a hardware timer to prevent infinite loops.  The cleverness allowed 
was overwhelmed by the problems and this was deprecated in newer 
systems.  In fact, the "extended mode", which is used for most new 
software, redefined that instruction bit to something else thus 
eliminating the possibility of using this stuff except for legacy type 
software.  Almost certainly a good thing to do.
