You're talking about the *wubi* installer not a Live CD session that *only* uses a ram drive. Starting with I think Jaunty, Canonical started having an autorun linked to wubi and if you stuck the CD WHILE in Windows it would initialize wubi. Wubi was garbage IMO, and used to foul-up on me because of number of drives I had on the system and they was not continuous drive letters.
