Windows doesn't either in my experience. Not only that, but when
Windows can't cope with the situation it will scramble my icons too.
That's something that X does not do.

No. Linux is what you use when you want to rescue someone that's
trying to use MacOS or Windows as an HTPC. It might be wholesale or
just piecewise. However, it's still Free Software to the rescue.
