     Do you ever use pronouns when you speak or write a natural
language?  That is, do you ever refer to some person or thing
without using a name?  Do you say "Parshant went to Rajiv's
birthday party, and Parshant gave Rajiv a gift along with best
wishes from Parshant's mother," or do you say "*I* went to
*his* birthday party, and *I* gave *him* a gift along with
best wishes from *my* mother"?

     The analogy is far from perfect, but that, in a way, is
what pointers allow you to do: To write code that refers to
objects without using names. This means you can get the code
to do something with variable X, and then use the exact same
code to work with variable Y, and then use it again to work
with variable Z, all by writing the code to use "that variable
over there" and giving it a pointer to X this time, Y the next
time, and Z the time after that.
