Same with me, as I used Linux Live for years without problems and then 
one day, BOOM! It trashed Windows.

No! Ubuntu Live will work like 99% of the time. It is like playing 
Russian Roulette. But why play that game? Use something else that 
doesn't gamble with Windows. Like BartPE or WinPE which doesn't even 
touch the Windows drive unless you want it too.

Me either. I tried it with 2GB of RAM. I have no idea what happens with 
512MB.

Every time somebody suggests using Linux Live to look and try to do 
something on a Windows drive, I just cringe! Even when somebody 
suggested to Monica to use Ubuntu Live to pull off all of the data 
before formatting the hard drive, I did as well. Although playing the 
Russian Roulette game, it had toasted her Windows file system too.

It had taken me two years to learn the truth. It isn't easy to find. 
Lots of people believe there are no secrets with Open Source. As it is 
there for everybody to see. Unfortunately almost nobody reads the source 
code. So bugs that has been there for years are still there.
