Actually that isn't true! As I learned this out the hard way. I heard
that Ubuntu doesn't touch the Windows partition and leaves it alone. But
I don't know what good is Open Source if nobody bothers to read it?

I did some investigating after Ubuntu Live toasted my Windows XP install
three times in a roll back in 2008. I had to restore from a backup each
time. And I believed when everybody was saying Ubuntu Live doesn't touch
Windows.

But that isn't true at all. As Ubuntu Live looks around on the drive
looking for a swapfile it can use. On a Windows system, it grabs the
Windows swapfile for its own use. LINUX SHOULDN'T BE TOUCHING ANYTHING
IN A WINDOWS PARTITION PERIOD! Bad, bad, Linux!

In my case, I was running Windows on a SSD. Microsoft and anybody worth
anything will tell you to turn off the Windows swapfile if you have
enough RAM to run Windows without one. This is to reduce excessive
writes to the SSD. Windows XP runs fine in this configuration.

Although Ubuntu Live isn't happy without a Windows swapfile. So it
creates its own in the Windows partition. So in my case, when you boot
up Windows next time... it loads the Windows Installer and hangs. As
Windows thinks it is supposed to load something, but doesn't know what?

So yes, Ubuntu Live does touch Windows and *can* render Windows in an
unusable state. :-(

Thus I always remove the Windows drive first if I want to boot Ubuntu
Live on a system. That way it can't screw up Windows. And if it is
Windows you want to repair, don't use Linux! Use something that is safe
with Windows like BartPE or WinPE instead.

Monica in the alt.sys.pc-clone.dell newsgroup just last week got burned
by Ubuntu too. As it recently toasted her NTFS and now apparently
nothing can read it. :-(
