I read somewhere that on modern IBM mainframes there is no speed
penalty for unaligned operands.  Apparently the pipeline can do two
cache fetches or stores as fast as one.

Their memory architecture is a little unusual since they typically
have a dozen CPUs with fully coherent shared memory.
