I vaguely remember something in Blaauw and Brooks "Computer 
Architecture" talking about how several different families of computers 
all evolved, at different tiimes, to byte addressed, power of 2 sized.

Sorry - I briefly looked  for the quote in the book on my shelf, but I 
don't feel like going through the whole book.  I'm getting spoiled by 
electronically searchable books, it's tough to go back to paper.

Mentioning this because it may be relevant - B&B may have an example of 
what you want in their "zoo" of different computers.
