I flipped through my copy and didn't find anything, but there's a lot
to flip through, since it's arranged by family rather than
chronologically.  It's in Google Books, so you can try some greppage
there.  They just show snippets but they give you the page numbers.  I
am currently 3000 miles away from my copy of the book, so I can't do
much now.  It does find a page where they say that Stretch was the first
8-bit byte machine.

I also looked through the two IBM history books by Pugh et al, and to the
extent they mention the addressing at all, they say it was invented for
the 360 as part of handling both word and character addressing.
