Obviously for many users on common platforms the preferred approach is going
to be to distribute executables that the platform can simply use.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what you're objecting to.  Are end users expected
to have an easier time with build scripts that will need to be customized
for every compiler, with a failure to customize things properly yielding an
executable file that may 99% work, but fail at inopportune moments, versus
having a set of source files that can only have one possible meaning and
when processed will either yield that meaning or be rejected altogether?
