The constant of proportionality in Kepler's third law is 4 * Pi^2 / (G * M)

So we have P^2 / a^3 = 4 * Pi^2 / (G * M)

P = sqrt(Pi^2 * a ^ 3 / (G * M))

Where the central body is the sun, the product G * M is known more
accurately than either of the factors, being 1.32712440018(9)×10^20

The semi-major axis of Earth is 149,598,023 km

Plugging those numbers in gives a value for P of 31558244.21 seconds,
which is 365.26 days to two decimal places.

Since the Earth's orbit is not circular, the velocity varies around the
orbit. It can be approximated by taking the semi-major axis as the
radius of a circle, calculating the circumference of the circle, and
then apply distance divided by time.

Indeed, that's not the only circularity involved, since the mass of the
Sun was calculated by applying this formula in reverse to get G * M, and
then dividing by the value of G determined by laboratory measurements.

Sylvia.
