Since the Earth's orbit is not circular, the velocity varies around the orbit. It can be approximated by taking the semi-major axis as the radius of a circle, calculating the circumference of the circle, and then apply distance divided by time. Indeed, that's not the only circularity involved, since the mass of the Sun was calculated by applying this formula in reverse to get G * M, and then dividing by the value of G determined by laboratory measurements.
