I my experience it is and the code I wok with uses them extensively.

Which can never produce more code than the equivalent solution with 
macros would produce.  If a class template is the cleanest solution (in 
the C++ world), use it.  Only the functions that get used will be 
instantiated (only once), so the net result is much the same as Jacob's 
solution.

No, the two are orthogonal.  Templates simply make it easier to do 
generic things with user-defined types.
