My Grade 2 was arranged by perceived merit into three levels.  As an
arrival from outside the school district who had missed most of a
month at the end of Grade1 due to the moving, I was tossed into the
lowest of the classes.  About three weeks into Grade 2, they moved me
to a different class.  Another week into the new class, the teacher
told me to take the book home over the weekend.  "If you can read
through to at least page xx on your own, we'll put you into the blue
group."  (And no, the blue group wasn't famous for percussion music
humour in the sixties.)
