Same here. Same book somewhere around the same age.

Four teachers taught my cohort in four separate classrooms at my
elementary school. The English hour was special in that most students
had to go to a different class room. For English, the cohort was
re-divided by merit, all of the best students got together in one class
room, all of the worst students got together in another class room, and
the rest of the students were split between the two remaining rooms.

My home room was also the top English class room. That spared me from an
alien desk for English. IIRC we spent some of the time reading whatever
grabbed our interest. _The Runaway Robot_ was available in the room and
at some point its cover grabbed me.
