Oh Lord.

The first two science fiction *books* I read were Coblentz's _Into
Plutonian Depths_ and Farley's _The Radio Man_ (retitled _An
Earth Man on Venus_). They had been reprinted in the 1950s but
dated from the 1920s. It is a wonder that I ever read any SF
again ... except that my mother subscribed to _Astounding._ So I
was reading SF *stories* before those dreadful books. I can
remember looking over her shoulder to read a story which must
have been Schmitz's "Space Fear" (1951, if memory serves).
