  Then I don't understand why - in your case - Facebook gets started and
downloads posts.

  I even don't understand why Facebook downloads "a mess of posts"
if/when it *does* get started.

  On my phone, Facebook just shows the 'home' page with *some* posts. I
just did this now and if I do *not* scroll down to get more posts,
Facebook has used 0.9MB of data, not really a number to get my knickers
in a twist.

  Are you sure the 'posts' do not contain any videos (and you have
'Video play automatically' set to on)?
