I remember reading about 1975 an article in "73" about some high school kids who got the school's PDP-8 to send Morse code. So I suspect if nothing else, by that time the 8s may have filtered down as the 11 came in, so the kids would have something to play with. In my high school, when I arrived in 1972, or maybe shortly after, there was a computer class, taught by one of the math teachers. But they had a TTY machine to a mainframe somewhere (perhaps the schoolboard owned it). I remember seeing the TTY machine, but don't remember much else, after a certain point I don't remember hearing about it, but I don't know if that's because things changed, or I just didn't hear anything.
