I first tried Debian, because they were "so free", but I had to do a 
limited install, and all that dependency stuff was too much for a 
beginning.  Besides, their version of 'free" meant they didnt' include
Pine, and I wasn't up to installing it from some other source.

So in the week after Christmas 2000, I find among the clearance books
at the big chain bookstore "SLackware Linux for Dummies" and the two CDs 
are still in there, just a mildly ripped cover.  It came to about $15.00,
so I grabbed it.

So from my experience Debian was too complicated, Slackware is for dummies 
and easy to get going.
