It meant you could fit two ports on a card backplate, so you didn't have
a flying lead to another on a separate backplate, wasting a slot in the
days when this mattered. The original PC only had five slots, and
needed separate cards for video, floppy controller, hard controller,
serial and parallel.
VGA died (is dying) because it's a connector used for analogue data to
analogue devices (CRT monitors) which has no place in today's computers.
If you use VGA (analogue) with an LCD monitor (digital), you've got a
digital device (the PC) putting out an analogue signal, which is then
converted back to digital in the LCD monitor. Two D/A conversions with
resultant loss of detail. That's crazy.
DVI-I and DVI-A ports have analogue outputs and DVI-VGA cables are
freely available for those that want it.
