=10\n.) Also it will no longer be a universal text file, but one that uses a specific escape mechanism. For it to work, the entire filename must be part of the scheme. (Although I don't think every file name need be.) But suppose the format chosen was that of the C string constants. Now a list of such names might be: one two "three\nfour" And program to read a list of such names is not longer that simple. But suppose now you wanted the contents of that file as the name of another file, complete with actual newlines, and the existing escapes (line3 is used literally). That filename in a file will now look like this: "one\ntwo\n\"three\\nfour\"\n" (not sure about that final \n). Now that filename reader will have its work cut out. It will be easier to read the contents of the file, than its name! Making filenames so 'flexible' was an incredibly bad idea. -- bart
