Rest assured: XML *is* big, unfortunately. The main problem with XML is
that it cannot even be parsed without a schema:

 * The schema (document type) defines the entities ("&xxx;"). A valid
   XML file may contain, say, "&aring;", but the XML parser has no idea
   what to make of it in the absense of the schema.

 * By default, white space around attribute values is insignificant.
   Thus, <tag x="y"/> and <tag x=" y "/> are equivalent—unless the
   schema says otherwise.

 * By default, newlines and white space between tags is significant.
   Thus, <a><b/></a> and <a> <b/> </a> are different—unless the schema
   says otherwise.

Other gripes include:

 * Namespaces are horrifying. Not many XML enthusiasts understand them.

 * Attributes are superfluous.

 * CDATA is superfluous.

 * Following the DOM standard, DOM parsers generally assume external
   framing. IOW, the DOM parser must be told where the XML element ends
   even though it could figure it out on its own. This external framing
   is accomplished by encapsulating documents in files or HTTP PDUs.

A lot of people have migrated to JSON. Unfortunately, there is a serpent
in the JSON paradise as well: the JSON parser must support five
different character encoding schemes (UTF-8, UTF-16LE, UTF-16BE,
UTF-32LE and UTF-32BE).
