I remember getting in a discussion with Anton here on clf about
computing the billionth Hamming number, and he wrote some Forth code
that did it with a clever algorithm that involved allocating a billion
64-bit cells (8GB).  One could say that's not a real-world problem, but
it's still a concrete example of a Forth program that someone considered
interesting enough to write, that wouldn't have fit in a 32 bit system.

As another issue, 64 bits give you much more safety from integer
overflow.  Maybe your program was written in the 1990's and did
something with dialup modems.  It might have been reasonable to use a
32-bit cell to hold the number of bytes transferred in a session.  Run
the same program now with broadband internet and you can overflow 32
bits in an hour or less.  Programs deal with bigger numbers than they
used to.
