I suspect that many 64 bit applications do not care about memory 
requirements any more, and force my 8GB system into continuously 
swapping state. As soon as databases or other big data sets (files...) 
enter the scene, it's no problem to run out of physical memory by 
loading entire files into memory.

In former days[tm] I could use WinWord 1.0 on Win3.1 on a 4MB notebook, 
even with big documents. But nowadays, who would care for such a 
sophisticated application and data segmentation, when the virtual 
address space is near unlimited? :-(
