When that failed, there was no longer a publicly visible clock in town. A decade ago, a local mall operator added a flashy electronic sign to an already dangerous intersection that shows (intermitently, between the ads) the time, further endangering after-dark pedestrians. My local branch bank manager was bemused -- concerned, I think, that I had some tedious crackpot complaint to make -- when I asked if it were bank policy not to have a visible clock behind the tellers. (He didn't know the answer.) Only our local, large but family-run hardware store has a clock in plain sight. Huh. Recently, someone gave me (what I took to be) an better than average quality Chinese knock-off of some prestige-marque watch, fully mechanical, in return for a favour. But its self-winder wasn't reliable and it was so much trouble to select the right winder-stem mode and reset it that I gave it back. Oh, well, except for days when I have to see the dentist, I don't have to know what time it is more accurately than I can learn from the sun, even on a overcast day. -- Mike Spencer Nova Scotia, Canada
