Any conforming compiler will do -- just use uint_fast32_t and mask once at the end. What's missing from C is a simple way to say "I want the correct arithmetic result or nothing". You can program it (which is a bit messy) and use conditional compilation where you know your hardware will help out, or you can use a compiler that will do it for you. -- Ben.
