It isn't; why do you ask?. The term isn't used in the standard,

Yes, the standard does; see N1570 5.2.4.2.2. DBL_DIG is defined as:
number of decimal digits, q, such that any floating-point number
with q decimal digits can be rounded into a floating-point number
with p radix b digits and back again without change to the q decimal
digits
followed by some clarification using math notation that I won't try to
reproduce here. (This uses "q" because the definition covers FLT_DIG,
DBL_DIG, and LDBL_DIG.)

It would not qualify to be called "double" in a conforming C
implementation. Of course it could be called "float", and if you know
that float is much more efficient than double on a given target, you can
just write your code to use float.
