Thanks for the details and anecdotal evidence, Moe.  I've only
recently started to use masquerade/NAT occasionally (so there may
indeed be some setup error that only shows up under particular
circumstances) and the instance of which I complained was my very first
attempt to interact with an "on-line shopping" site.

The only other site where I need verifiable security works with my
newer-but-still-very-old-browser so NAT hasn't come into it.

I'll have to ask on my local LUG mailing list if anyone has run into
this or has detailed knowledge of the problem.
