I wonder to what extent the running time of typical bignum calculations
are dominated by multiplication and division, since they are usually
implemented with quadratic-time algorithms.  Multiplication also
produces a result that uses more memory than its operands, so you can't
do it in place.  For addition/subtraction, you may have to reallocate if
the result overflows the highest cell, but that's infrequent.

Idioms like   ( a b ) 2DUP > IF something THEN 
would be pretty wasteful though, if they are actually copying the
bignums just to compare them and drop them.

Maybe you are on to something though, at least for modest size numbers,
up to a few kilobits (enough for cryptography).
