Right.  So in 8th the objects are in the pool, so there is only one 
level of indirection.  But thus they may not get a cache hit.  However, 
I wanted to avoid extra memory allocations; I suppose a 
double-allocation could work just as nicely, but not sure if it would 
make a big difference in practice.  I may try it on an experimental 
branch, as one of my lesser goals is to improve performance.

Good question.  Depends on the bignum engine they use.

That's interesting.  Though not too helpful for 8th, as its targets are 
the standard commercial OS platforms on commodity hardware.
