Connection closed by foreign host.

anon@lowtide:~/usenet$ grep '^Subject' out |wc -l
21
anon@lowtide:~/usenet$

Try this:

-----------------
#!/bin/bash
if [ ${#} -ne 2 ];then
  echo "${0} <lowartid> <highartid>"
  exit
fi
USER=your_username  #  <--- set this
PASS=your_password  #  <--- set this
GROUP=comp.os.linux.advocacy
LOW=${1}
HIGH=${2}
cat <(
echo "authinfo user ${USER}"
echo "authinfo pass ${PASS}"
echo "group ${GROUP}"
for((i=${LOW};i<=${HIGH};i++));do
echo "article ${i}"
done
echo "quit"
) - |telnet localhost 119 >out
-----------------

Set your username and password in the script. All posts will be
in the file 'out' (which you can change of course). You could script
it more and connect once to get the article range, and parse that,
blah blah whatever.
