It doesn't matter how you connect. Telnet works too. This is all that newsreader software does when connecting. It just sends nntp commands, and the server responds. The server doesn't care how you connect. It's just listening on the port and responding to commands. It's the same with HTTP and any other internet service. Each service has its own set of commands that it understands.
