It doesn't make much sense to talk about the "PDP series" as they are mostly very different machines and despite the numbers there is no implied progression. The PDP-10 was a 36-bit timesharing mainframe. With the usual compliment of peripherals it cost high six to low seven figures, and required three-phase power and an air-conditioned environment. The PDP-8 (12-bit) and PDP-11 (16-bit) were minicomputers, much more affordable for schools, laboratories, or a single department, and had markedly less stringent power and environmental requirements. None of these machines could be said to be the precursor or descendent of the others, and they all had different hardware architectures and software.
