It's not a "crappy workaround".

If PHP would *require* a closing tag at the end of a script it would
cause a runtime error when omitting it. But it does not - for good reasons.

"If a file is pure PHP code, it is preferable to omit the PHP closing
tag at the end of the file. This prevents accidental whitespace or new
lines being added after the PHP closing tag, which may cause unwanted

script."

Well - when changing a script one should do this carefully anyway and
not just add HTML without looking at the code. Or do you just blindly
add HTML to production code and use it without testing?
