Could you describe the distinction between those formal and informal
meanings? I would assume, in context, that both Keith and David were
referring to what, on typical Unix-like systems, results from using the
"mkfifo" command or the "|" symbol at the command line, or the pipe() or
popen() functions in C code. Those are four different ways of invoking
the same feature of the operating system. Does that differ from your
expectations?
