For many purposes, it doesn't matter whether it's a simple program or
not.  I run the "gcc" command, it does whatever it does, and I end up
with an executable file and/or some diagnostic messages.

Upthread, you wrote "It is really a fiction that gcc is a free-standing
program."  Perhaps I'm just missing the point you were making.
