Agreed, but this doesn't obviate Mark Thorson's (and Peter Kogge's, and 
...)'s point, that turning around a pointer indirection outside the 
processor may be worthwhile.

What it says is that turning indirections around at the memory 
controller, always, is probably not a good idea.  You probably need to 
adjust things so that it turns around at whatever level of the memory 
hierarchy is appropriate.  Maybe not the L1 cache, but possibly the L2 
or L3.

Which also means that, in addition to handling virtual memory, you may 
also need to handle cache coherency.  Usually the memory controller does 
not participate in the cache protocol, eh?  But, perhaps if you have an 
in memory directory. Was that Stanford's Dash and Flash project? (Can't 
remember if that was an in cache directory, or in memory.)

Now, many of the supercomputer folks I used to work with think that 
caches are a waste of power.  I'm not there yet.
