More importantly, they are both off the mark.
Stefan was talking about multiple references to the symbol-macro, like
(symbol-macrolet ((x (complicated-place)))
(list x x x)) ;; place evaluated three times
Yes, a single (incf x) expression will treat the place correctly
through the symbol macro, simply because it expands into
(incf (complicated-place)). But if we have (progn (incf x) (incf x)),
those two copies of the place know nothing about each other;
they don't share their evaluation.
