Forth consists of more than stack manipulation words.
What you are thinking of would work in the kind of Forth compiler I
have in mind, but would not be very effective; it would cause quite a
lot of compiler overhead.
However, on a different level these definitions would work, and be
somewhat effective: For implementing compile, for these words; they
would work on the compile-time representation of the data stack. But
of course, it's even more effective to do
: 2dup 2dup ;
etc. instead.
Concerning the primitive generator: We already have >300 primitive
specifications for that, with correct (tested) stack effects. Ok, for
the native-code compiler we have to add code generation code for many
of them, but going away from the generator does not save us from that.
