You have much more serious problems than not being able to play CDs.
You need to figure out what's going on with package management and fix
it, so you can keep up to date.

Ah.  Never mind my earlier hypothesis.  It shouldn't be a driver
problem; your drive should work just fine with the standard SATA
drivers.
