that mouse is awful. use a different mouse. any usb mouse will work.

there is if you want to identify the problem.

disk utility doesn't check all that much, but if the drive is actually
ok, then the system on it is likely corrupted. reinstall. problem
solved. for now. it's still an 11 year old hard drive and well past its
expected lifetime.
