I've told this story before, but it was before you appeared in AUE, so I'll repeat it. The Australian government has a scheme to fix the shortage of doctors in rural areas. As part of a "skilled migration" program, they steal doctors from poorer countries, telling them that if they agree to practice in a rural area the government won't look too closely at their qualifications. None of this is admitted publicly, of course, but I have the strong impression that that is what is going on. Anyway Karuah, a small town north of Newcastle, finally got a doctor. His doctoring skills were OK, but his English was less than perfect. At the time my ex-wife was working in a psychiatric hospital in Newcastle. They got a new patient from Karuah. His clinical notes said that he was obsessed with killing birds. rA his first intefivew, he said "Stone the crows! I don't know why they sent me here". He was discharged at once. "Stone the crows" is an old-fashioned expression, but can still be heard from rural speakers. -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW
